MATCH REPORT:
Clacton Cannons v's Colchester Bulls

by Daniel Tight
Director & Senior Coach

Date: Friday 9th December 2016
Venue: Tendring District Council's Clacton Leisure Centre, Clacton
Attendance: 35
Score: Bulls win 65 to 59.

LOW ATTENDANCE

Last Friday night Cannons showed just how far they've already come as a team this season. This was their second match up against Bulls 3, after they went down by 12 on game day one, but a solid and committed performance tonight meant that the loss second time round was only in single digits. It's also worth noting that Cannons were ahead for large periods of the game, and never trailed by greater than 8 points.

Despite the loss Coach Chris Tight described it as "one of the best performances so far this season", telling his players "to make no mistake about the high standard of team they were up against".

The theme of this game was defence, and to a high standard. Both teams really were outstanding when they didn't have possession. The defiance, effort, desire and teamwork were there for all to see. When it did come to the offensive end the teams had two very different approaches. The experienced Bulls team attempted to control the game,  and they moved the ball,  and themselves, around very well and very deliberately in order to create most of their scores. Whereas the Cannons were always looking to score fast and push the ball up court.  When they did manage to really increase the tempo of the game they scored on almost every possession, and often two or three times without reply, as the Bulls struggled to keep up with the Cannons' young legs.

Riley Taylor and Peter Ellis combined to score almost 30 points between them. Whilst Ben Wilkins scored with his first shot of the game, after sitting patiently waiting for his time to come on and impress.

All in all Cannons can head into the Christmas break very pleased with themselves, after securing 3 victories and putting on a run of  quality performances during the first half of the season.

KS2 Basketball returns

by Daniel Tight
Director & Senior Coach

DOUBLE THE COMPETITION

Date: Tuesday 22nd November 2016
Attendance: 32 Children plus 125 parents/guardians

Results:

Mayflower Mavericks 6 - 0 Holland Haven Heat

The Cannons KS2 Basketball League is gradually expanding across the district. This month it ran at both Clacton County High School and Harwich And Dovercourt High School. Seven primary schools comprising of children in years 4, 5 and 6 competed across both tournaments to try and move their way up the league table.

St Osyth Scorpions retained top spot after another convincing set of performances at the Clacton competition. Scorpions beat Holland Park Panthers, Alton Park All-Stars and Holland Haven Heat en-route to registering a 100% record this month. The Panthers and All-Stars both registered a couple of victories in this tournament which shows signs of the development they are making. The Heat failed to win this month, however the performance levels were high and a few baskets they scored were amongst some if the highlights of the tournament. They showed great togetherness and teamwork as they  defended tirelessly and worked the ball up the court quickly in order to create scoring chances.

Over at the Harwich event a late withdrawal saw just the one game take place, however this was definitely a case of saving the best until last. Mayflower Mavericks took on Two Village Titans. The Mavs raced into a large lead, however The Titans grew in confidence throughout the game and finished the game very strong, The Mavs held on to win by 6 (36-30) but had the game been a couple of minutes longer the result could have been different.

The Cannons KS2 Basketball League is developed and run by Cannons Basketball Club, and it is supported fantastically by the PE departments and students at the high schools that host the tournaments.

Cannons Basketball Club would like to thank schools, parents and our local sponsors  for their fantastic, continuous, support of the KS2 Basketball League.

Next tournaments are due to take place in mid-December. For more information on to get involved please click on www.cannons2006.co.uk or email us on office@cannons2006.co.uk

MATCH REPORT:
Clacton Cannons v's Braintree Blue Devils

by Daniel Tight
Director & Senior Coach

Date: Friday 18th November 2016
Venue: Tendring District Council's Clacton Leisure Centre, Clacton
Attendance: 72
Score: Cannons win 73 to 62.

CANNONS WIN THREE IN A ROW

A depleted Cannons team produced a superb display of teamwork, hustle and defiance in order to overturn an 11 point third quarter deficit to win by 11 points, in their last outing against a strong Braintree Blue Devils side.

The first half was definitely one in which both coaches would have been extremely happy with their sides defensive efforts. Rhys Tight, Daniel Hammett and Nick Moodey producing a handful of blocks and steals between them were the highlights for the young Cannons team. There was also time for Riley Taylor to knock down a couple of vital three-pointers to ensure Cannons remained neck-and-neck with the Blue Devils at half time.

However, in the second half it was the 'old heads' that managed to pull the team onto victory, with their experience and drive it helped everyone to keep up the energy levels required. Player/Coach Chris Tight didn't play too many minutes, but when he was on court the 48 year old steadied the ship brilliantly; assisting for fun and allowing Cannons to transition smoothly from defence to offence. Paul Taylor demands high standards from himself and all around him, and that is vital in close games. The commitment to the cause he showed was great to see, he also chipped in with a couple of well earned baskets on the break. It was also a big game for Cannons leading scorer this season, Daniel Tight put up another 20 points, made two blocks and a grabbed a hatful of rebounds to allow Cannons to remain with their opponents throughout the game.

Another game where every player scored; including Billy Price who could well miss the rest of the campaign due to a scheduled surgery. "It was a great moment when Bill scored his free-throw and the whole team bench and fans jumped to their feet in happiness", said Coach Chris Tight "We going to miss him, he's been big for us so far this season" added court captain Daniel Tight.

Cannons would like to thank the fans that always turn up for them at the Clacton Leisure Centre. Cannons are without a doubt the best supported team in the league!

This win sees Cannons early season home form continue, they have now registered three home victories on the bounce in the Suffolk Senior League. Another couple of records broken as this is the first time Cannons have won three home games in a row in their history, it is also their best ever start to a SSL season.

CANNONS UNDER 11's WIN 2 OUT OF 3

On Sunday Clacton Cannons U11's played their monthly Junior Central Venue League Matches. They had a slow start in the first match against Cambridge Cats however, they exploded into life in their second game against Herts Royal's, showing team spirit and togetherness beyond their years to come back from behind and send the game into overtime.

During the over time period Cannons scored 8 points without reply; Jenson Edwards leading the scoring and making some excellent rebounds. Toby Young assisted with some fast break scores which lead to Cannons winning the game.

Cannons 3rd game was the highest scoring and the most exciting. The game was in balance right to the final whistle. During the game we saw Daniel Vale bringing the ball up the court with confidence, starting off the cannons offence. Kees Levine was hustling for every loose ball and scoring some important baskets. Luke Willis was knocking down shots and getting some great rebounds, both Faith Pepper and Jack Cherry worked hard to continuously get up and down the court throughout the game.
Within the final minute Cannons had the lead by 2 points, they then losing by 1 point after a 3 pointer from Leopards Black and then there was a quick inbound pass from Daniel Vale to Jenson Edwards who attacked hard down the wing to score with a shot under extreme pressure to send the cannons back into a 1 point lead with still enough time for Leopards Black to get the ball down the court which saw a finger tip block from Jenson Edward only to see the ball fall to a leopards player under the basket ready to shoot but with every Cannons player putting him under pressure the ball just missed as the buzzer went for the game to end in a 31-30 victory for Cannons.

Coach Chris Tight was so proud of all the players and the overall team spirit. It was nice to have the parents support it was a real privilege.

CANNONS BLAST TO RECORD WIN

Clacton Leisure Centre was rocking last Friday night as the Cannons team put on a real display to record the biggest victory in the club's history (87-33), and the win was made even sweeter as it came against their local Clacton rivals, The Centurions.

The sidelines were packed with at least 50 supporters, and they created great noise throughout the game. Their team didn't not disappoint them either, as Cannons put on a real team performance. This game saw each Cannons player register at least one basket, and many scores were made after some delightful free flowing passing moves. Players Rhys Tight (17), Riley Taylor (17) and Daniel Tight (14) combined for 48 of the Cannons 87 points. Although it was a three pointer from Richard Edwards and a fantastic teardrop runner from Ben Wilkins that really got the crowd on their feet.

Coach Chris Tight was over-the-moon with the victory, in particular praising his team's tireless defensive efforts and outstanding togetherness.

Cannons are in good form at the moment, winning two of their last three league games and currently sitting fifth in the Suffolk Senior League Division 2, a mere two points off of the summit.

Cannons are next at home on Friday 18th November, 19:40, versus Braintree Blue Devils. Why not come along for FREE and support your local basketball club.

CANNONS RECORD FIRST WIN OF SEASON

Friday night saw Cannons record their first win of the season, in a game come battle against Bury Bulldogs at Clacton Leisure Centre.

The game was very well supported, by around 40 people. all players and coaching staff would like to extend their thanks to all that came, and enjoy competition in the best atmosphere in the league. No where in the Suffolk Senior League compares to playing in Clacton!!

Cannons put in a great performance at both ends of the floor. Working tirelessly on defence and played an impressive and disciplined full court trap intermittently throughout the game. Their defensive efforts were rewarded with many uncontested scores on offence, the final score of 63 - 36 really reflected the balance that Cannons found in the game.

Onwards and upwards with Cannons looking to build on this result and performance by picking up another win in their next game taking place in Ipswich on Tuesday 27th October.

Clacton Cannons v's Colchester Bulls

Director & Senior Coach

Date: Monday 3rd October 2016
Venue: Monkwick Sports Centre, Colchester
Attendance: 26
Score: Bulls win 71 to 59.

TOUGH GAME AGAINST LEAGUE FAVOUROITES

Cannons faced a tough game against one of the championship favourites in their opening league game of the season, away to Colchester Bulls. The young Cannons team, featuring only 3 players over the age of 18, rose to the challenge and impressed their coaches and fans a like. Coach Chris Tight told players that even he "did not expect a performance of that quality".

Riley Taylor put in a solid performance for Cannons; handling the ball well, scoring 11 and assisting in excess of ten baskets for his team. Daniel Hammett also put in a shift, securing rebounds and finishing close to the basket on many occasions, especially in the second half.

The Bulls were strong and used their bench well, balancing experience and youth. Many Bulls players showed an ability to shoot threes or long twos, thus was what ultimately won them the game. They hit six three pointers throughout the game, and really put the Cannons defence under pressure during the opening five minutes of the third period, The Bulls won the third period 25-11.

Cannons did ultimately finish second best in this game, losing by 12 points, however they out scored their opponents by 11 points (19-8) and did not concede a basket in the last four minutes, in the final period, showing that they stayed dedicated to the cause right until the last.

Cannons' will be itching to go again, and you can next see catch them in action away to the Cossacks at Brightlingsea Sports Centre on 12th October 2016, 20:15. The Cannons will play their first home game of the season, at Clacton Leisure Centre on Friday 21st October 2016, a 19:50 tip off against Bury Bulldogs.

Clacton Cannons v's Brightlingsea Nomads

Date: Tuesday 20th September 2016
Venue: Clacton County High School's PE Department

Score: Nomads win 84 to 64.

STEADY IMPROVEMENT OF YOUNG CANNONS TEAM

Cannons succumbed to a second defeat of their preseason on Tuesday night, as they went down by 20 points to the Brightlingsea Nomads.

In what was a very physical game, there was also some good basketball on show. There were a number of well worked scores, from both sides, with a fantastically disguised pass from Rhys Tight, that got both benches and a many fans on their feet, the pick of the bunch as Cannons scored on a counter attack.

The predominantly U18 Cannons side registered 64 points against a physical Nomads team, that were also playing a lot of players from their first team last season.

The Cannons pressed fiercely throughout the game and caused their opponents to turn the ball over a number of times, unfortunately they couldn't always capitalise on these turnovers and missed a host of layups and high percentage shots.

However, Coach Chris Tight was impressed with his team's fight and the way they went hard to the basket on many occasions!

The young Cannons team are definitely showing steady improvements, and the past two games are positioning them nicely a head of the new  season tipping off.

MATCH REPORT:
Clacton Cannons v's Cornard Kings

by Daniel Tight
Director & Senior Coach

Date: Friday 16th September 2016
Venue: Tendring District Councuil's Clacton Leisure Centre
Attendance: 42
Score: Kings win 50 to 37.

EXPERIENCED KINGS DEFEAT YOUNG CANNONS

Cannons hosted the freshly re-formed Cornard Kings in Clacton last Friday evening. Even though this was the first fixture in the Cannons preseason programme, the team were still disappointed to lose. The vast majority of the Cannons team were much younger than their opponents, and their speed and fitness levels were apparent throughout. However the Kings did a great job on the boards therefore limiting the Cannons' chances to fast break and really capitalise on those young legs.

Both teams would have hoped to have scored more, but equally would have been pleased with their defensive efforts. There were defiantly positives that both sets of coaches and players could take away from the game, and I'm sure as the summer cobwebs are shook off there will be a lot more to come from these two teams. In particular the young Cannons team! Next game: Tuesday 20th September 2016, 20.15 tip at Clacton Coastal Academy (formerly Colbaynes School).

Keep an eye on our attendance figures because Cannons 2006 in association with Tendring District Council are pleased to be committing to our 2016/2017 COMMUNITY JUMP INTO SPORT campaign designed to introduce as many families as possible to watch and engage with sport.

Additional:

Hi Matt,

I have just uploaded a new Press Release to the Cannons 2006 website (usual place). It’s one of those stories that is BIG NEWS for us, but is currently a bit boring in copy so I’d like you to jazz it up a little please.

Daniel engages particularly well with very young children so we expect membership and retention to increase once again in the 3 – 5 year old Pay&Play Basketball Club, which is held on Thursdays at CCHS PE Department between 4.00 and 4.40PM. The current Under 11’s and Under 14’s Team are also particularly excited about Daniel’s return because they joined as the youngsters when Cannons started back in 2006.

As a business we are also excited because Daniel’s other area of expertise is meeting Head Teachers and introducing Cannons 2006 to new schools.

Kind Regards,

Scott
